Designer Aries Sin Mei-Yuk is the creative mind behind MODEMENT. Her talent, expertise and unique design philosophy have been recognised on the world stage. From a pop-up store at Hong Kong fashion house Joyce Boutique to a six-month exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Sin’s designs have received accolades across creative and cultural landscapes.

WAVE

The ocean nurtures and sustains marine and terrestrial lives. Unfortunately, it has fallen victim to decades of abuse and neglect. Hong Kong-trained ready-to-wear designer Aries Sin has been in the fashion industry for 10 years and runs her own fashion brand. To raise awareness about protecting the ocean with the medium she is most familiar with, Sin ventured into installation art, using recycled fabrics to create a three-dimensional artwork named Wave. To recall the dynamic and natural form that is present on the shores of over a thousand islands in Hong Kong, contrasting textures, sustainable materials and myriad strands are woven together to create a sculpture that is part tapestry, part textile and part indoor space intervention. The ends of the fabrics are held by metal rings that are attached to a frame, but the extremities overflow onto a beige base as if they were an ocean wave breaking ashore. Presented to the public in the artist’s intentionally “incomplete” and “imperfect” state, Wave beckons as everyday fabrics are reinvented to resemble an inspiring physical phenomenon that urges viewers to reflect upon how to stop marine pollution.
